Kobe’s geesteskinderen ogen lyrisch, doorgaans ook ongedwongen zorgeloos, maar toch zitten ze in een strak keurslijf. Ze stralen een aanstekelijke vrolijke eenvoud uit, maar steken tegelijk bijzonder ingenieus in elkaar. Ze zijn ontsproten aan het brein van een perfectionist en estheet, die naar het realiseren in drie dimensies toe, alles wat anekdotisch is onverbiddelijk weert. Het zijn beelden met wellustige, soepele lijnen, maar gebouwd omheen een steriel geometrisch karkas. Ze verleiden door hun ronde, vrouwelijke vormen en vrolijke poses, maar door hun bovenmenselijke perfectie en mysterieuze rust sluiten ze ook buiten. Gezichten zijn gesloten, ontdaan van persoonlijke kenmerken. Thematisch domineren de vrouwelijke figuur en het paard het oeuvre. Klassieke thema’s met een lange kunsthistorische traditie. Maar Kobe houwt niet zomaar ‘een’ vrouw of ‘een’ paard, hij sculpteert archetypes. Zijn vrouwen en paarden bevatten in hun eenvoud de essentie van hun wezen. De eenvoud die Kobe’s beelden uitstralen verhullen hun ingenieuze natuur. Tussen idee en afgewerkt beeld ligt dan ook een wereld van abstraheren en redeneren. Nadenken over mogelijkheden en het oplossen van vormproblemen.

Kobe – Ingenious simplicity
Kobe, artistiek pseudoniem van Jacques Saelens (1950-2014) maakte van sculpturen die flirten met de tweedimensionaliteit zijn handelsmerk. Zijn brede, dunne figuren benutten nauwelijks de derde dimensie en incarneren behoorlijk wat contradicties.
