Although the rectangle does not exist in nature, it has always been Harada’s ultimate endeavour to reflect his inner life in all its aspects within this form. That is why his works cannot be reduced to mere abstraction. Harada worked monochromatically for a long time until one day a burst of colour appeared in his black and white world. Sparkling yellow is characteristic of many of his works. This vivid colour palette confirms that Harada was essentially always looking for a way to express inner happiness, spirituality and joie de vivre. Hiroshi Harada’s work cannot be categorised. He is modern, not only in the way he paints, but also in the way he touches and overwhelms us with the exuberant colour combinations from his inner repertoire, with lines and planes that either cross or miss each other.
Each of his works invites contemplation. In everything, he remains true to his Eastern roots and the idea that ‘beauty is to be found in imperfection’.
