In accordance with the philosophy of Gaasbeek Castle, the works of great names and up-and-coming talents enter into dialogue with the romantic castle interiors. We meet sleeping figures and poetic daydreamers, but also mysterious shadows and oppressive nightmares. Visitors are immersed in an unreal atmosphere inspired by the blue hour. You find yourself in an intermediate world, floating between day and night, between waking and sleeping.
Sleeping Beauties wants to be much more than a predictable collection of sleeping beauties. This exhibition in Gaasbeek Castle (9 Sept. to 13 Nov. 2011) takes the visitor to a dream world down the rabbit hole. The exhibition presents a selection of works of contemporary art from the last thirty years that were specifically inspired by sleep and dream.
Jan Cox (1919-1980) was born in The Hague and spent his youth in Amsterdam. Shortly before the Second World War he moved with his parents and brother, composer Harry Cox, to Antwerp and studied art history at Ghent University.
With TraumA, the Triennial of Bruges dives into the ‘uncanny’ history and reality of Bruges. Historical layers are exposed, forgotten or hidden storylines discussed. This edition explores the thin line between dream and trauma, between paradise and hell. It appeals to the imagination, to the pomp and circumstance, but also to the ‘uncanny’ that is present underground. For although Bruges seems to be a dream destination for many, poverty, loneliness, pollution or fear also lurk in this picture-perfect world.
Triennial Bruges 2021: TraumA uses artistic and architectural interventions to bring the less attractive aspects to the surface and make them part of the city’s image. It creates a polyphonic discourse, where there is room for imagination, beauty, darkness and complexity. A space where artists and architects can explore both the stage and the dusty wings. Triennial Bruges 2021: TraumA balances between the present and the hidden. With a course of sculptural, architectural and organic creations, it is a celebration of the versatility and mobility of this city.

Pablo Atchugarry’s father, also an artist, instilled in him the love for the trade. Not without result: Pablo held his first solo exhibition in Montevideo (Uruguay) when he was only 18. He developed not only as a painter, but also as a celebrated artist with materials such as cement, wood and metal.
The exhibition catalogue Frontières Invisibles presents the work of more than seventy European artists of about twenty different nationalities. Under the title “Les Frontières Invisibles”, lille3000 is organising several exhibitions at the Tri Postal in Lille, about an ever-changing, elastic, “XXL” Europe, whose borders are shifting more and more to the East.
