Jan van Eyck’s oil painting Madonna with canon Joris van der Paele is one of the main attractions of the Bruges’ Groeningemuseum, it is a masterpiece, an icon, a crowd puller and undoubtedly one of the best examples of Flemish 15th century painting. In light of the Van Eyck year 2020, art historian Jean Luc Meulemeester wrote the definitive book about the illustrious panel. This bulky book highlights the historical context in which the work came about and places it in an art-historical tradition. In addition, the technical execution, the iconography and symbolism of the work are extensively discussed and links are made to possible places and interiors, but also older paintings, which may have inspired Van Eyck. It also elaborates on later artists who have been influenced by the panel. Both the figures on the painting, its composition and the space ¬– the Gothic throne with the carpet and even the tiles – have been repeated several times over the centuries. This book does not pretend to bring new insights, but because of its completeness and contextualization it is much more than a thorough introduction. It is an invitation to revisit the much-debated painting, to look at it from a fresh perspective and most of all to fully enjoy the great genius of Jan van Eyck.
